What is
LASIK?
LASIK is the
most-widely accepted form of laser vision correction
and has been around for about 11 years in the United
States. The purpose of LASIK is to eliminate or
decrease a person’s dependence on contact lenses or
glasses. This is accomplished using a
computer-controlled excimer laser. Using an
extremely precise instrument called a microkeratome,
the surgeon carefully creates a thin flap in the
surface of the cornea, which is then folded back to
expose the middle section of the cornea. Next, the
computer-controlled excimer laser gently reshapes
the underlying corneal tissue so that light rays can
focus clearly on the back part of the eye (retina).
The flap is then replaced (without stitches or
adhesive) and the patient can return home. Most
patients experience little o frdiscomfort after
the procedure. Nearly full restoration of visual
acuity occurs within 24 to 48 hours of surgery.
No
matter where you live, affordable, state-of-the-art
LASIK is available to you at LASIKfirst in
fabulous Los Angeles.
Who
is a candidate for LASIK?
LASIK is for individuals 18 years old or older who
are nearsighted (myopic), farsighted (hyperopic), or
have astigmatism. A LASIK patient should have
generally healthy eyes and an adequately thick
cornea (as measured by a test called pachymetry).
Pregnant or nursing women and people with certain
active autoimmune diseases are not good candidates
for LASIK.
All
prospective LASIK patients should realize “perfect
vision” may not be possible with any kind of vision
correction surgery and should have realistic
expectations.

candidate. Our conscientious and caring staff look
forward to meeting you.
How
successful is LASIK?
In
studies conducted by the FDA (please see
www.fda.gov), all treatments produced enhanced
vision without eyeglasses. Also, 95 percent of
treatments resulted in 20/40 vision or better,
allowing patients to pass a driving-test in most
states as well as perform everyday activities
without the need for glasses or contact lenses. More
than two-thirds of patients achieved at least 20/20
vision.
What is the best laser for
LASIK?
There are numerous lasers available for LASIK eye
surgery, very much like there are different makes of
cars. LASIKfirst uses the world’s most
popular (i.e., the most number of LASIK procedures
are performed on our laser system in the world) and
updated laser for LASIK.
Is LASIK
painful?
LASIK patients rarely report any pain during or
following surgery. During the first 24-48 hours, you
may feel like you have a grain of sand in the eye,
but usually the only thing that you will feel is
dryness.
Is there an age
limit for LASIK?
You must be at least 18 year old to have LASIK.
There is no upper age limit for LASIK, but patients
over 70 years of age often have visually-significant
cataracts, and they may benefit more from having
cataract surgery than LASIK. LASIK does work quite
well after cataract surgery to fine tune the
refractive results.
Are both eyes
treated at the same time?
Yes, usually. If you wish one eye to be corrected at
a time, we can certainly do that.
What if I have astigmatism?
LASIKfirst
has the latest in LASIK software. As such, we are
able to treat 95% of cases of astigmatism.
What are
the side effects of LASIK?
Temporary side effects include light sensitivity,
dryness, and halos around lights at nighttime.
Patients with large pupils may notice glare
following surgery, but this usually disappears with
time.
Because no surgical treatment is 100% safe, we ask
that you make sure to discuss all of the possible
side effects and complications of LASIK with your
surgeon.
Is
LASIK permanent?
LASIK is a permanent correction. This does not mean
that the vision cannot change after LASIK, but
generally it does not.
